MAUNEY WINS HIS THIRD PBR EVENT OF YEAR IN ALBUQUERQUE

03/25/2012

BY: Jack Carnefix

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - J.B. Mauney posted his third win of the 2012 Built Ford Tough Series on Sunday, earning $39,150 for his victory at the Ty Murray Invitational presented by Sandia Resort & Casino.

Entering the Built Ford Tough Championship Round in second place, Mauney rode Pure Smoke (Cody Ohl/Ken Beshears/K-C Bucking Bulls) for 90.75 points on the second-to-last ride to take the lead with 351.5 points. The only rider to cover all four bulls in the event, Mauney finished first in the championship round.

It then came down to the final ride of the event for defending Albuquerque champion L.J. Jenkins of Texico, N.M., who bucked off RMEF Gunpowder & Lead (Jeff Robinson Bucking Bulls) at 7.6 seconds. Jenkins, who won the event in 2008 and 2011, finished third with 261.75 points.

Harve Stewart finished fourth with 261 points, while Justin Koon was fifth with 254.5 points. Stewart finished third in the championship round with 89 points on Meat Hook (Martinez Bucking Bulls, LLC), and Koon was fourth with 83.75 points on Lincoln Electric's Bring It (Chad Berger/Clay Struve/Box K Cattle Company).

Valdiron de Oliveira moved into first place in the BFTS standings, 64.75 points ahead of Mauney, who was the leader for the past six weeks. Oliveira, who was ranked No. 1 for three weeks earlier in the season, finished second in the championship round with a 90-point ride on Junior Bonner (Southwick/Crooked Six) to finish second in the average with 265.5 points. He earned 879.5 BFTS points for his average finish, and also earned 249.5 points for his third-place finish in the second PBR 15/15 Bucking Battle on Saturday. Points in the PBR 15/15 Bucking battle did not count toward the event results, but do count toward the season standings.

Defending PBR World Champion Silvano Alves moved up to third place in the season standings, following a second-place finish in the PBR 15/15 Bucking Battle, and a 22nd-place finish in the event average.

RMEF Gunpowder & Lead won the Pabst Blue Ribbon Bull Award for being the high-marked bull of the event, earning 45 points (out of 50) for his buckoff in the championship round.

Nine-time World Champion and PBR co-founder Ty Murray hosts the Albuquerque event each year. The BFTS features the Top 35 bull riders in the world competing against the toughest bulls on the planet.

The next stop for the BFTS is the Kansas City Invitational at the Sprint Center in Kansas City, Mo. Bull riding begins at 8 p.m. on Saturday, March 31, and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 1. Tickets begin at $10, and are available at www.Ticketmaster.com or by telephone at (800) 745-3000.

Albuquerque was the 12th stop of the 2012 BFTS season, which opened on Jan. 6-8 with capacity crowds at Madison Square Garden in New York. The BFTS will make 28 stops in 23 states before the Built Ford Tough World Finals in Las Vegas on Oct. 24-28. The World Finals are where the PBR World Champion will be crowned and awarded the coveted championship buckle and a $1 million bonus. The richest bull riding event in the world, the World Finals has a total purse of more than $2 million.

The BFTS is televised every week on CBS, CBS Sports Network, NBC, NBC Sports Network, and YouTube. BFTS telecasts are produced for the PBR under a multi-year agreement with David Neal Productions, a Los Angeles-based production company led by 34-time Emmy® Award winner and Peabody Award winner David Neal, who serves as executive producer.
