AIRDRIE, Alta. – With a multitude of events over the past six weeks during what’s colloquially known as Cowboy Christmas, one PBR Canada rider has truly made his mark.
Taking home wins in Ponoka and Lacombe, Alberta, along with capturing the PBR Canada Cup Series event title in Kelowna, British Columbia, Garrett Green has launched himself firmly into the Top 5 of the national standings.
Despite the busy summer schedule, Green says he hasn’t adopted any new routines. He’s simply riding a wave of momentum, fuelled by good health and growing confidence.
Boasting a 60% riding average and having won three of the last four events he’s entered, the 33-year-old is enjoying one of the best stretches of his career.
“Summer run's been really good for me,” Green said. “I stayed on most of my bulls. There’s only a couple that got me off, so I had a good run. Can’t complain.”
“I’m feeling really good, healthy, and confident. By the end of the year, that 60% could probably be around 70% or 75%.”
Looking back, it’s hard for Green to pick a single highlight, but both Ponoka and Kelowna stand out as memorable wins.
“Kelowna is definitely right up there. In Ponoka I really enjoyed splitting the win there with Brady Fielder and Julio Cesar Marques,” he said.
“I liked the Ponoka win. That was pretty cool. And to win the Kelowna Cup Series event, over the last few years I’d head out there with the boys and we’ve always brought it home. Except for last year, when Jared [Parsonage] won it. Before that, Brock [Radford] brought it home and I think Wyatt [Gleeson] did too. I was with them both times, so it was cool that I got to win it this time.”
“We have a good time out in Kelowna,” Green added. “We usually go to the beach or head out a day early. That building is usually smoking hot around the short round, but this year it was great. They pack the crowd in and it’s electric every single time.”
Green credits some of his success to travelling with a strong crew of friends and competitors.
“Ashton Sahli and Jake Gardner have been jumping in quite a bit. Dawson Shannon too. It’s been good travelling with those guys. They’ve got great attitudes, everything's easy going, and they’re riding well too.”
Sitting fourth in the national standings, Green knows how tight the race is. The Top 5 are separated by just 364.5 points, and with a packed fall schedule and key Cup Series stops in Grande Prairie, Medicine Hat, and Saskatoon still to come, the race is far from over.
“As far as I’m concerned, this is one of the best PBR Canada seasons ever,” he said. “Nobody’s really running away with it. The Top 5 guys are all close, all going hard, and all healthy.”
“Every event from here to the end of the year is going to be very exciting.”
When it comes to short round bull picks, Green says he doesn’t overthink it. He focuses on recent performances.
“We’ve got a great set of bulls up here. The stock contractors have done a great job. I don’t have one bull I go to every time,” Green explained.
“I just watch how they’ve been bucking the weekend before. If one catches my eye, that’s the one I go with.”
While Green is set to compete at all remaining PBR Canada Cup Series events, he’s also looking forward to a few Touring Pro Division stops still on the calendar.
“I really like Armstrong and the Glen Keeley. Those are the two that stand out for me among the Touring Pro events.”
