CALGARY, Alta. – In seemingly unstoppable form, reigning PBR (Professional Bull Riders) Canada Champion Dakota Buttar (Kindersley, Saskatchewan) once again rode supreme Wednesday evening in Calgary, Alberta, going a perfect 2-for-2 to win the second iteration of the Cody Snyder Charity Bull Bustin’ at Grey Eagle Resort & Casino. After overtaking the No. 1 rank the previous evening, Buttar’s latest golden finish allowed him to further his stronghold on the top position, growing his lead to 29.33 points.

As the event got underway in front of the electric Alberta crowd, Buttar posted the fourth-best score of Round 1 when he made the requisite 8 atop Double Deuce (Outlaw Buckers Rodeo Corp.) for 81 points.

Buttar’s outing in Calgary remained unblemished in the championship round, when he once again covered his bovine athlete opponent, this time marked an event-best 89.5 points aboard One Eyed Charlie (Outlaw Buckers Rodeo Corp.).

The Kindersley man is now amidst a six-out ride streak, last bucking off in late August when Alberta Prime Union Jack (Kesler Bucking Bulls) brought him down in 4.1 seconds in Lethbridge.

Last season, Buttar tied the league’s ride streak record in Canada when he covered 11 straight bulls on home soil. Buttar first set the record between the 2018 and 2019 seasons when he also rode 11 consecutive bulls in Canada.

For his third event win of the year, Buttar earned 27 national points. He now leads No. 2 Zane Lambert (Ponoka, Alberta) by an augmented 29.33 points after beginning the event 2.33 points out front.

Seeking history in 2021, should Buttar repeat as the national champion, he would become the first rider to win the Canadian title in consecutive seasons. Further, he would become just the third multi-time PBR Canada Champion in league history, joining the likes of three-time title holder Aaron Roy (Yellow Grass, Saskatchewan) and two-time champion Lambert.

As the only other contender to go a perfect 2-for-2, young gun Griffin Smeltzer (Claresholm, Alberta) was second, netting 20 national points.

Smeltzer rode Straight Up G (Vold Rodeo/Prescott) for 84 points in Round 1, before going the distance aboard Bat Chute Crazy (Outlaw Buckers Rodeo Corp.) for 84.5 points in the championship round.

While the home province hopeful began the event No. 9 in the Canadian standings, the career-best finish propelled Smeltzer up three positions in the rankings to No. 6. He now trails No. 1 Buttar by 59.83 points.

Cody Coverchuk (Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan) finished third compliments of his Round 1 win.

The 2018 PBR Canada Champion briefly led the event after riding Southern Trespass (Outlaw Buckers Rodeo Corp.) for 84.5 points in Round 1, but was denied his third event win of 2021 when he was bested by Sam Crow (Outlaw Buckers Rodeo Corp.) in 3.12 seconds in the final round.

The bronze showing earned Coverchuk 15 national points, elevating him from No. 4 to No. 3 in the race for the 2021 PBR Canada Championship and accompanying $50,000 bonus. Coverchuk trails No. 1 Buttar by 39.83 points.

Fourth was 2017 PBR Canada Rookie of the Year Coy Robbins (Camrose, Alberta). He logged his lone qualified ride in Round 1 when he covered Bull Dogg’n (Vold Rodeo) for 82.5 points.

Robbins earned 7 national points and after beginning the second iteration of the Cody Snyder Charity Bull Bustin’ unranked is now tied for No. 22 in the national title race.

Rounding out the Top 5 in fifth was Dawson Shannon (Drayton Valley, Alberta), collecting 4 national points.

Shannon earned the career-best effort after riding Crazy Town (Outlaw Buckers Rodeo Corp.) for 79.5 points in the opening round.

In the bull pen, Gifted (Vold Rodeo) and Stickin n’ Movin (Eno Bucking Bulls) tied for the high-marked bull of the event honor.

Each earning a 45.5-point score in the championship round, Gifted earned the marks when he bucked off Smeltzer, a double-entry, in 3.87 seconds, while Stickin n’ Movin turned heads after sending Robbins to the dirt in 3 seconds.
