Perfect Gilmar Santana Wins PBR Canada Touring Pro Division Event in Waskesiu Lake, Saskatchewan

WASKESIU LAKE, Sask. –  Following two days of intense action at Elk Ridge Resort, Gilmar Santana (Leduc, Alberta) emerged the supreme competitor, delivering a perfect 2-for-2 performance in Waskesiu Lake, Saskatchewan, to win the PBR (Professional Bull Riders) Canada Touring Pro Division’s 8 Seconds at The Ridge.

Santana first struck in Round 1 when he delivered the fifth-best score, marked 80-points atop Funk Master (CS Bucking Bulls).

The up-and-coming Brazilian then clinched the event win in the championship round when he conquered Samcro (Lazy S Bucking Bulls) for 83.5 points.

The golden finish garnered Santana 53 national points.

Compliments of a double entry, Santana also finished seventh. His 79.5-point ride on Mad Hatter (CS Bucking Bulls) in Round 1 netted him an additional 11 national points.

The collective 64 national points allowed Santana to surge from No. 10 to No. 4 in the race for the 2024 PBR Canada Championship and accompanying $100,000 bonus. He is now within 280.5 points of No. 1 Cody Coverchuk (Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan).

Coverchuk’s 131.5-point lead over No. 2 Jake Gardner (Fort St. John, British Columbia) went unchanged as neither rider competed at 8 Seconds at The Ridge.

Grady Young (Leader, Saskatchewan) was second, earning 36 national points.

Despite bucking off Bare Foot N’ Crazy (Rafter 8 Bulls) in 5.94 seconds in Round 1, he rebounded in triumphant form in the championship round.

Paired with Halo’s Flyin’ Cadillac (X6 Ranch Bucking Cattle/Legend Rodeo Stock), Young reached the requisite 8 for an event-best 86 points.

Young left Elk Ridge Resort with 36 national points rising from unranked to No. 18 in the nation.

Courtesy of a Round 1-best, 83.5-point ride atop Crossfire’s Black Jack (Lazy S Bucking Bulls), Weston Davidson (Strongfield, Saskatchewan) was third. Collecting 26 national points, Davidson rose from No. 8 to No. 6 in the Canadian standings, now within 299 points of No. 1 Coverchuk.

Fourth was Dusty Golden (Mayerthorpe, Alberta). Golden topped Quiet Riot (Lazy S Bucking Bulls) for 83 points in Round 1 to net 20 national points. After travelling to Waskesiu Lake unranked, Golden is now No. 26 in Canada.

Rounding out the Top 5, and tying for fifth, was Chad Hartman (Lancer, Saskatchewan) and Stefan Tonita (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan). Both riders logged 82.5-point rides in the opening round to earn 16 national points.

Hartman covered Joe Exotic (CS Bucking Bulls), while Tonita bested Poundmaker (Skori Bucking Bulls).

Both chasing their first PBR Canada Championship this November, Hartman rose from No. 20 to No. 15, while Tonita climbed from No. 27 to No. 20.

In the bull pen, Whiskey Moon (Skori Bucking Bulls) bucked supreme, crowned the Bull of the Event. Posting matching, and unrivaled, 44-point scores, Whiskey Moon first lit up the scoreboard when he tossed Pokey Houghton (St. George, Utah) in 3.5 seconds, only to return to the arena the very next night to post a matching bull score for his 5.15 seconds of work against Young.

The 2024 PBR Canada seasons continues May 24 in Dauphin, Manitoba. Action for the Touring Pro Division’s Mazergroup PBR Dauphin, presented by the Dauphin Adventure Fund, gets underway at 7:30pm CDT on Friday, May 24.
