GRANDE PRAIRIE, Alta. – After being sidelined for two months due to injury, two-time PBR (Professional Bull Riders) Canada Champion Cody Coverchuk (Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan) made his triumphant return to competition this weekend in Grande Prairie, Alberta, going a perfect 3-for-3 to win the Cup Series’ Peace Country Invitational and overtake the No. 1 rank in the fierce race for the 2024 PBR Canada Championship and accompanying $100,000 bonus.

Coverchuk is chasing history this November 8-9 at the 2024 PBR Canada National Finals in Edmonton, Alberta, at Rogers Place. Should he remain atop the standings and win this season’s title he would tie Aaron Roy (Yellow Grass, Saskatchewan) for most national titles won by one rider with three.

The Saskatchewan man first put points on the board when he tied for third in Round 1 via an 84-point ride on Times A Wasting (Thompson Rodeo Livestock). He then overtook the second spot on the event leaderboard when he covered Two Bills (Two Bit Bucking Bulls) for 83 points.

In the championship round, Coverchuk elected to go head-to-head with Langham Kid (Two Bit Bucking Bulls), a decision which proved dividends. Remaining in perfect time with the powerful animal athlete, Coverchuk reached the whistle for and event-best 87.5 points, clinching the victory.

Coverchuk’s golden finish earned him a crucial 231 national points. After traveling to Grande Prairie ranked No. 2 in Canada, 3 points behind then No. 1 Nick Tetz (Calgary, Alberta), Coverchuk overtook the top spot, now leading new No. 2 Tetz by 173 national points.

Tetz finished fifth at the PBR Peace Country Invitational, going 1-for-3. His 84-point ride on Night Stalker (X6 Ranch Bucking Cattle/B2 Braithwaite Ranches) earned the 2022 PBR Canada Champion 55 national points.

Jordan Hansen (Okotoks, Alberta) finished second in the main event.

Hansen led the PBR Peace Country Invitational entering the final round after riding Here and Now (Thompson Rodeo Livestock) for 80 points in Round 1, tying for the sixth-best score, and covering Time Marches On (Thompson Rodeo Livestock) for 87.5 points to win Round 2.

The charismatic Albertan, however, was denied the event win when he was upended by Tailor Made (X6 Ranch Bucking Cattle) in 3.61 seconds in the final round.

Hansen also finished second in the event’s accompanying 5/5 Bucking Battle Friday night, besting MoBamba (Thompson Rodeo Livestock) for 84.5 points.

Garnering 156.5 national points, Hansen surged from No. 15 to No. 6 in the PBR Canada national standings. He now trails No. 1 Coverchuk by 739.5 national points.

2023 PBR Peace Country Invitational event winner, and reigning PBR Canada Champion Dakota Buttar (Eatonia, Saskatchewan) was third.

Buttar earned 105 national points for his 86-point, Round 1-winning ride on Pay Day (Skori Bucking Bulls), rising from No. 7 to No. 3 in Canada.

Attempting to become the first back-to-back PBR Canada Champion in history, Buttar is now within 666.5 points of the top spot.

Rounding out the Top 5 in fourth was Ashton Sahli (Red Deer, Alberta).

Topping Patiently Waiting (Skori Bucking Bulls) for 84.5 points in Round 1, the home province hopeful collected 68 national points. Sahli rose one spot in the Canadian standings, climbing from No. 9 to No. 8, inching within 751 points of the top spot.

In the bull pen, Moonwalk (Thompson Rodeo Livestock) bucked supreme, crowned the YETI “Built for the Wild” Bull of the Event. Bucking in the championship round, the powerful animal athlete posted an unrivaled 44.5-point score for his 1.57 seconds of work with Auzyn Corr (Dawson Creek, British Columbia).

The PBR Canada Sup Series next travels to Medicine Hat, Alberta, and Co-op Place for the PBR Medicine Hat Classic on October 19. Action will get underway nightly at 7 p.m. MDT.  Tickets are still available and can be purchased at Co-op Place and The Esplanade, by phone at (403) 502-877 or online at Tixx.ca.
