West, Buttar, Radford Record Rides at PBR Unleash The Beast’s Anaheim Invitational

ANAHEIM, Calif. – With four Canadians once again competing stateside on the elite PBR Unleash The Beast, three left the Anaheim Invitational having recorded 8-second efforts, led by young gun Lonnie West (Cadogan, Alberta).

To being the event, the 23-year-old covered Diamond Willow (Dakota Rodeo/Chad Berger/Clay Struve/Diamond Willow) for 85 points in Round 1. The qualified ride left West eighth after the opening round, and propelled him to a $370 pay day.

West’s event, however, came to an early end.

Sustaining a concussion during his Round 1 buckoff, the Albertan was relegated to the sidelines the remainder of the event.

West concluded the event 17^th overall.

Close behind, and also recording his 8-second effort in Round 1, was Dakota Buttar (Kindersley, Saskatchewan).

After riding Beaver Creek Beau (Chad Berger/Clay Struve/PBR Rock Bar) for 84 points, the two-time Glen Keeley Award winner finished the event 21^st.

The final Canuck to reach the whistle in Anaheim was Brock Radford (De Winton, Alberta).

Rebounding from a 7.07-second buckoff of Dusty’s Revenge (Dakota Rodeo/Chad Berger/Clay Struve/H&C Bucking Bulls) in Round 1, Radford made the 8 aboard More Big Bucks (Dakota Rodeo/Chad Berger/Clay Struve/Staci Wilks/N Bar Ranch) in the second round for 82.5 points.

He finished the event tied for 23^rd.

Current Canadian No. 1 Jared Parsonage (Maple Creek, Saskatchewan) also rode at the California event inside the Honda Center, however was bested by both Rotten Bananas (Weber Bucking Bulls) in 3.69 seconds, and Handsome Jeff (Dakota Rodeo/Chad Berger/Clay Struve/Diamond Willow) in 2.55 seconds.

Jose Vitor Leme (Ribas do Rio Pardo, Brazil) rode his way to his third PBR Unleash The Beast event win of the 2019 season after a perfect weekend at the Anaheim Invitational at the Honda Center.

The 2017 Rookie of the Year rode Smoke Show (Humpz And Hornz/Sis N Stan/KMH) in Round 2 for 88.75 points, putting him in position to select Rising Sun (Struve/Heald Pro Bulls) with the first pick of the championship round draft.

The Brazilian cowboy recorded an impressive 90.5 points in the championship round, propelling him to the win. He took home $42,660 and earned 700 world points to move from No. 2 to No. 1 in the world.

Leme now sits 451.66 points ahead of 2017 World Champion Jess Lockwood (Volborg, Montana) whose weekend in Anaheim moved him down to the No. 2 spot in the standings. 

Alisson de Souza (Taubate, Brazil) took home second place for the weekend. In Round 2, de Souza scored 86.75 points aboard Snake Eyes (Cottonwood Bucking Bulls, LLC) and brought the crowd to its feet with a monster 88.25-point ride atop Catfish John (Dakota Rodeo – Chad Berger/Clay Struve/Miller) in the championship round. The Brazilian was awarded $20,100 and 365 world points, jumping him from No. 25 to No. 15 in the world.

Third place went to Joao Ricardo Vieira (Itatinga, Brazil), who scored 87.25 points aboard Pitch Black (Dakota Rodeo/Chad Berger/Clay Struve) in Round 2. Vieira went on to cover Bad Brad (Humpz And Hornz/Sis N Stan Bucking Bulls) in the final round of the event for 86.75 points which earned him $12,500 and 270 world points to hold the No. 4 ranking.

Rookie of the Year contender Dylan Smith (Ararat, Virginia) came in fourth place for the weekend after riding 4 Bears (Dakota Rodeo/Chad Berger/Clay Struve) in Round 2 for 87 points. Smith couldn’t hold on to Safety Meeting (Dakota Rodeo/Chad Berger/Clay Struve/Hruby/Kainz) in the championship round and was bucked off after just 4.35 seconds. For his efforts, the Virginian took home $8,125 and 177.5 world points, moving him from No. 41 to No. 34.

Rounding out the Top 5 for the event was young gun Ezekiel Mitchell (Rockdale, Texas). The rookie rode Check It Out (Dakota Rodeo/Chad Berger/Clay Struve) in Round 2 for 85.5 points but couldn’t make the 8 aboard Spotted Demon (Julio Moreno/Dallas Schott) in the championship round. The Texas cowboy took home $5,200 and 105 world points, keeping him at No. 19.

The title of YETI “Built for the Wild” Bull of the Event was awarded to Big Black Cat (Dakota Rodeo/Chad Berger/Clay Struve/Heald Pro Bulls) for his monster 45-point out, bucking off Daylon Swearingen (Piffard, New York) in 2.71 seconds in the championship round.

The Top 35 bull riders in the world will now head to Springfield, Missouri, for the PFIWestern.com Invitational at JQH Arena September 13-15. 

In other PBR news over the weekend, at the first PBR Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour event in Peoria, Illinois, since 2017, Alex Cardozo (Indaiatuba, Brazil) used a championship round-winning ride to propel himself to victory at Saturday evening’s Peoria Classic inside the Peoria Civic Center.

After just seven riders covered their opening round draw, the 29-year-old advanced to the final round courtesy of time, bested by Comanche (Mike Miller Bucking Bulls) in a heartbreaking 7.27 seconds.

Capitalizing on his second chance, Cardozo rose to the occasion, riding Peep Show (Cornwell Bucking Bulls) for an event-best 86 points to capture the event win.

For his efforts, the Brazilian earned a check for $7,900 along with 170 world points. 

Cardozo additionally earned an invite to compete on the elite PBR Unleash The Beast on Sept. 21-22 at the Fairfax Invitational inside EagleBank Arena in Fairfax, Virginia.
