Lonnie West Leads Canadian Contingent at Past Weekend’s Montana Touring Pro Division Events

NEW YORK CITY – With four Canadians travelling stateside this past weekend to begin their 2021 seasons at a pair of Touring Pro Division events in Montana, Lonnie West (Cadogan, Alberta) led the contingent, tying for 10^th at the Kalispell Automotive Group PBR.

In addition to West being joined by fellow Canuck riders Brock Radford (De Winton, Alberta), Coy Robbins (Camrose, Alberta) and Bryce West (Cadogan, Alberta), two past PBR Canada Champions were also in action. Both making their 2021 season debuts, 2014 PBR Canada Champion Stetson Lawrence (Williston, North Dakota) returned to action after undergoing reconstructive left shoulder surgery following the 2020 PBR World Finals, and 2019 PBR Canada Champion Daylon Swearingen (Piffard, New York) was back in the draw after undergoing offseason shoulder and hip surgery.

For West, he got off to a hot start in Kalispell, covering Twisted Mind (Clay Struve/Dakota Rodeo/Chad Berger) for 84.5 points in Round 1. While he punched his ticket to the championship round, West was unable to continue the momentum, bested by Westley’s Pet (Clay Struve/Dakota Rodeo/Chad Berger) in 2.87 seconds.

Further up the leaderboard for the Kalispell Automotive Group PBR, Swearingen made a splash in his return to competition, finishing second as one of three riders to go a perfect 2-for-2.

The New York native’s golden finish, which earned him 8 world points, included an 86.5-point ride on Buttons (Clay Struve/Dakota Rodeo/Chad Berger) in Round 1, following by an 89-point score aboard Tested Crazy (Ken Barnhart/Clay Struve/Dakota Rodeo/Chad Berger) in the championship round.

Lawrence also finished inside the Top 10, concluding the Touring Pro Division event sixth, earning 2 world points. The North Dakotan notched his lone qualified ride aboard Get Shorty (Heald Pro Bulls/Clay Struve/Dakota Rodeo/Chad Berger) in Round 1, marked 86.5 points.

Unable to reach the requisite 8, Radford, Robbins and Bryce West all registered Round 1 buckoffs in Kalispell.

Radford was dispatched by Short Stack (Clay Struve/Dakota Rodeo/Chad Berger) in 3.37 second, Robbins was sent to ground by Bad Situation (Clay Struve/Dakota Rodeo/Chad Berger) in 4.65 seconds, and Bryce West was gotten the better of by Sun Dog (Clay Struve/Dakota Rodeo/Chad Berger) in a swift 1.55 seconds.  

As Touring Pro Division action continued the following day in Great Falls, Montana, for the Dusty Gliko Bull Riding Challenge, Lawrence punctuated his season-debut in flawless fashion, winning the event and collecting 15 world points.

Lawrence, the only rider to go a perfect 2-for-2, first covered Buffalo Bill (Bird Bucking Bulls) for 83 points in Round 1, the sixth best score of the round. He then ascended to the top spot in the event when he went the distance aboard Something Magical (H&C Bucking Bulls/Clay Struve/Dakota Rodeo/Chad Berger) for 87.5 points.

After beginning the weekend unranked, Lawrence is now No. 77 in the world, 92.5 points outside of the Top 30 and a seeded position on the elite Unleash The Beast.

Unlike Lawrence, Swearingen wasn’t able to duplicate his Kalispell success in Great Falls, bucked off by Unstoppable (Clay Struve/Dakota Rodeo/Chad Berger) in 3.25 seconds.  

For the West brothers, Radford and Robbins, they also struck out in Great Falls.

While the younger Bryce Wester didn’t compete, Lonnie West was dispatched by Heart Throb (Clay Struve/Dakota Rodeo/Chad Berger) in 2.09 seconds.

Radford, he was bucked off by Fist City (Ken Barnhart/Clay Struve/Dakota Rodeo/Chad Berger) in 4.13 seconds, and 2017 PBR Canada Rookie of the Year Robbins was brought down by Loaded Situation (Lacey Scott/Dakota Rodeo/Chad Berger).
