SASKATOON, Sask. – At the regular-season PBR (Professional Bull Riders) Canada Cup Series, presented by Wrangler, finale in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, John Crimber (Decatur, Texas) iced the competition, delivering a flawless 3-for-3 performance in his Canadian debut, including a monstrous 90-point ride, to win the PBR Saskatoon Classic, presented by Redhead Equipment and CASE IH, cracking the Top 25 in the Canadian standings.
Crimber travelled to Canada amid an electric streak, having won nine events since making his PBR debut in mid-August.
Bringing his talents to the Great White North, Crimber quickly put points on the board in Round 1 when he rode Desperado (Vold Rodeo) for 83.5 points.
Tied for sixth, the teenage phenom used his early pick in the Round 2 bull draft to select Uncle Rico (Kinky Buckers). In a decision which proved dividends, Crimber teamed with the powerful animal athlete for a round-best 87 points, surging to the top of the event leaderboard.
For his championship round opponent, Crimber chose to go head-to-head with Bull of the Year contender Langham Kid (Two Bit Bucking Bulls). Nodding with confidence, Crimber burst from the chutes, matching the bovine athlete jump-for-jump en route to the requisite 8 as the crowd erupted in boisterous cheer.
As Crimber celebrated in arena, he was awarded a mammoth 91.5 points, tied for the second highest score this season on Canadian soil, cementing his tenth career victory.
Compliments of the golden finish, Crimber netted 144.5 national points. He vaulted from unranked to No. 22 in the Canadian standings. Attempting to make a come-from-behind push to qualify for the 2023 PBR Canada National Finals Nov. 17-18 in Edmonton, Alberta, Crimber is now within 65 points of the Top 17.
Atop the race for the 2023 PBR Canada Championship, the Top 5 went relatively unchanged. With No. 2 Dakota Buttar (Eatonia, Saskatchewan) and No. 3 Nick Tetz (Calgary, Alberta) sidelined by injury, the door was open for No. 1 Cody Coverchuk (Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan), No. 4 Coy Robbins (Camrose, Alberta) and No. 5 Aaron Roy (Yellow Grass, Saskatchewan) to make notable moves inside SaskTel Centre.
Coverchuk finished seventh to earn 33.5 national points.
The two-time PBR Canada Champion rode Red October (Vold Rodeo/Bow River Buckers) for 84.5 points in Round 1, before teaming with Bull Dozzer (Skori Bucking Bulls) for a matching 84.5-point score in Round 2.
The Top 10 finish allowed Coverchuk, who is attempting to tie Roy for most Canadian titles won by one rider, to grow his lead over No. 2 Buttar to 35.66 points.
Robbins was shutout, tossed by Black Jack (Skori Bucking Bulls) in a close 5.31 seconds in Round 1, and Far Too Filthy (Kinky Buckers) in a hard-fought 5.21 seconds in Round 2.
The 0-for-2 showing led Robbins to slip 99.5 points back of No. 1 Coverchuk.
Roy led the trio with a sixth-place finish which netted him 36 national points.
Despite being bucked off by War Boy (X6 Ranch Bucking Cattle/Legend Rodeo Stock) in 4.06 seconds in Round 1, the veteran Saskatchewan rider rebounded in resilient fashion on Championship Sunday.
Roy first broke through in Round 2 when he made the 8 atop Dark Mark (Flying Four Bucking Bulls) for 84 points to punch his ticket to the championship round.
He then concluded his home province event with a gritty 86-point score aboard Midnight Panda (Vold Rodeo/Bow River Buckers) in the final round.
When the dust settled, Roy, who is in the hunt for his unprecedented fourth national title, pulled within 125.66 points of No. 1 Coverchuk.
Returning to the top of the event leaderboard, Garrett Green (Meeting Creek, Alberta) was second in the main event and third in the accompanying 5/5 Bucking Battle to earn 114.5 points.
As the only other rider to cover all three of his bovine athlete opponents, Green advanced to the championship round tied for the event lead courtesy of his 84.5-point ride on Mogely (Lazy S Bucking Bulls) in Round 1, and 86-point score atop Diggin Up Bones (Thompson Rodeo Livestock) in Round 2.
Green then concluded the Cup Series’ regular season with an electric 87-point ride on Whiskey Clouds (Skori Bucking Bulls).
In the special round, Green delivered the third-best score, covering Disco Daze (X6 Ranch Bucking Cattle/Legend Rodeo Stock) for 84.5 points.
Green rose from No. 10 to No. 7 in the battle for the 2023 PBR Canada Championship and accompanying $100,000 bonus, now 207.66 points back of the No. 1 rank.
Third was young gun Chance Switzer (Hazenmore, Saskatchewan).
Switzer’s 86-point ride on Positively Bangin (Outlaw Buckers Rodeo Corp.) and career-best 88-point ride atop Time Marches On (Thompson Rodeo Livestock) earned him 70.5 national points. Switzer climbed from unranked to No. 29 in the standings, 139 points outside of the Top 17 and a berth to the 2023 PBR Canada National Finals.
Jake Gardner (Fort St. John, British Columbia) was fourth, collecting 59.5 national points.
Gardner stumbled when competition got underway Saturday night inside SaskTel Centre, tossed by Chairman Frank (Lazy S Bucking Bulls) in 4.69 seconds in Round 1.
Quickly reclaiming his title contending form, Gardner remained centered aboard Lil’ Hooch (Two Bit Bucking Bulls) in Round 2, marked a round-best 87 points.
Garnder then concluded his event on a high note, riding Al Capone (Thompson Rodeo Livestock) for 86.5 points in the final round.
The British Columbia native rose from No. 14 to No. 12 in the nation.
Rounding out the Top 5 in fifth was Wyatt Gleeson (Sundre, Alberta).
Gleeson’s 85-point ride on Mousetache Man (Shay Marks) and 86.5-point effort on Sicario (Two Bit Bucking Bulls) earned him 46.5 national points.
He remained No. 6 in Canada but closed within 162.33 points of No. 1 Coverchuk.
In the bull pen, Langham Kid was unmatched, crowned the YETI “Built for the Wild” Bull of the Event after posting a 44-point score during his monstrous 90-point ride with event winner Crimber.
Following a three-week break, the 2023 PBR Canada season will conclude in Edmonton, Alberta for the PBR Canada National Finals, presented by Command Tubular Products, when the 2023 PBR Canada Champion will be crowned, earning the accompanying $100,000 bonus.
Action for the year-end event inside Rogers Place will get underway at 7:00 p.m. MT on Friday, November 17 and Saturday, November 18.
